It took me a lot longer than I expected, but the new design of Directory Critic is now live! There are still a ton of things that need updating and changing, and a ton of new stuff that I am still working on. Here are a few changes that I’ve made:

1. New resources section with free phpld templates page
2. Main directory lists are now split into pages for faster load times
3. More advertising options are available (advertising page will be up soon)
4. New niche lists added, and a few more to come

If you find things that are not working correctly, please report them to me on the contact form.

In the next few days I will be running a logo design contest for the new DC logo. I will announce more details about that tomorrow or Thursday.

BOTW is always second on the list of directories I submit  to when launching a new site (Yahoo is always first). It’s a easy way to get a topic related authority backlink. If you have a blog, you can submit it for $39.95 (-20%). Note though that your blog needs to be 6 months old to get listed.

No one wants to waste their time submitting their site to a directory that is not even going to review it. There are directories in our lists that are completely dormant and not accepting new submissions.

I am working with a friend of mine who runs a manual submission service (and uses our free lists) on finding these directories and removing them from the database. So don’t be surprised if you see the list numbers drop suddenly in next few days.

This is only us pruning the lists and keeping them up-to-date 🙂

Directory Critic v2.0 has been a long time in the making. We are going to be doing a whole host of upgrades to the site over the next month or two. Here’s a rough time line of what’s happening…

1. Next week new design goes live
2. New advertising spots are opened for text links and banners
3. New local, country and state directory lists added
4. Webmaster and directory owner tools and resources

There’s a lot of stuff happening over the next couple of months, so check back to see what’s new!

I have just added a new niche list to the site:

Dating Directory List

So if you own a dating directory, now is the time to submit it! And, if you own a dating site you should consider submitting it to the dating directories on the list. Niche directories excellent for getting on-topic backlinks to your site.

I will be creating quite a few more niche lists over the next few weeks as I prepare for the new design. The local directory list will be separated out into countries (and maybe regions) so that it’s easier to find the local directories to promote your site.

I have just run the new version of the PR update script through the entire directory list so all the PR values should be correct now. If anyone finds any that are not, please report the directory and I’ll fix it manually. Thanks to the people who commented on here to let me know about the staggered update!

I have just run our PR update script on both the web and article directory lists. There were 1,790 PR changes in this update out of around 3,600 resources listed. Looks like a big shakeup, I noticed that quite a few directories have dropped down in PR on this update.

ListLocalBusiness.com just announced the launch of a new network of local business directories covering more than 85% of U.S. markets. The network includes more than 60 websites, each one covering a specific, vertical business. Each website is organized on a geographic basis, and listings can be submitted to the required market page.

Listings in the directories are completely free of charge to the listing business. The typical listing includes:

• Business contact information
• Direct Link to your website
• A description of your business

According to Neil Street, editor of ListLocalBusiness.com, the long-term goal for this network is to establish each website as a significant consumer destination, aimed at consumers who are searching for a business or service in their local market. Unlike purely regional directories, a vertical directory organized by market allows for the inclusion of a deeper array of business-specific information and resources, to assist consumers. Each website already includes an articles section, and businesses can gain further exposure and linkbacks by contributing short, original articles. Future plans call for increasingly richer content to be added to each site.

I am proud to report that Directory Critic has reached another milestone today. We are now listing over 3,000 active web directories! (this would probably be 5000 if we didn’t constantly update the list) But the number of directories is not the only thing that’s gone up, we now list almost 500 article directories and there have been a total of 2,735 active directory ratings by webmasters!
