Directory Critic

Thanks for the people who have been emailing me letting me know about the recent PR changes that are currently taking place. This is just a quick post to let you know that I’m fully aware of what’s going on, and once things settle down I will run the PR update script on all the lists on this site.

Please don’t report directories for incorrect PR or email me about it. Most of you probably know, it takes Google a while before all the datacenters and toolbars show the correct PR. Depending on what datacenter you use, the results could vary by a lot.

I arrived back from my holiday yesterday and have spent almost all my time online since then updating Directory Critic! I have added about 90 new directories, 5 new article directories and made about 150 updates and deletions!

I am leaving today to go away until 2nd January 2006. It’s the holiday season, and I plan to make the most of it! I will be checking my admin area today before I leave to add any waiting directories.

Just thought I’d post to say merry christmas to all the readers of this blog and users of the site. It’s that time of the year again, time to catch up with your friends and family and chill out for a while! I love this time of year, there’s so much happening…so many people to see etc etc.

Anyways, I am going to be out of the office for about 6 days over Christmas (22nd to the 28th). If you have a new directory, submit it now! I will be logging online almost daily but will not have the time to approve new directories and answer emails (besides, I don’t want to – it’s a holiday!).

So if you do email me, I will get back to you after the 28th..so please be patient. Happy holidays everyone!

Today, I will be removing the directory tracking from the site. I have been keep an eye on it the past month, and the system is not being used. I will consider re-writing a better system that will be implemented in January with a whole host of other changes I have planned for the site. You will start to see a few things change throughout the site in December, but the major changes will be happening in January so stay tuned!

I’m pleased to report, that last night Directory Critic had it’s 2000 active webmaster ratings! The growth of the site over the past 3-4 months is really exciting. Traffic is growing daily, we are getting loads of natural backlinks and we are getting more directory submissions than ever. The list still grows at about 70 new directories every week.

Now with more webmasters reporting directories that stop accepting free submissions, go offline, break the rules or stop accepting submissions the list is very up-to-date and we are also deleting quite a few directories off the list that will no longer benefit the webmasters that use this site.

I have a few updates and changes is the pipeline for Directory Critic and I’ll be announcing those as soon as I get all the fine points finalized.

This is just a quick post to say that there’s an advertising spot open on the paid directory list. This is a very popular spot, and this is the first time since I opened those spots that it’s become available. It won’t last long, first one to subscribe gets it!

Yesterday I added a report function to the article directory list. This is aimed to weed out many of the article directories that are with non-existent or not accepting new articles. I know there is quite a few of them. I have already removed about 20 and will do another 20 today. This should make the list much more user friendly.

I have also opened up 3 spots for advertising web directories, article directories or webmaster resources. The article directory list is one of the most popular pages on Directory Critic, so if you own a webmaster related site that needs some extra links and exposure head to the advertising page and subscribe.

I’ve got a few things to report today…

1. It seems to be a real trend for webmasters to start free directories and after about 1-6 months start charging for regular submissions, which is fine. But they usually keep the recip option open for free listings. So now, we have a directory type, Recip&Paid. So now we have:

1. Free (Free listings only)
2. Free&Paid (Free, paid and recip[usually])
3. Recip Required (Recip links only)
4. Recip&Paid (Reip and paid links)
5. Paid (Paid links only)

2. I just processed over 100 reports which had been getting backlogged. This resulted in quite a few directories being deleted from the list. So I just wanted to let webmasters know that if your directory has errors (mysql, suspended etc etc) I generally give you 1 week to sort it out before I delete your directory. If you are having hosting problems or something like that which might take longer than a week to resolve please email me and I won’t delete your directory.

Thanks to the people who have been reporting directories, you’re really helping keep the lists up to date.

On another note, just a messge to spammers who submit rubbish non-directory spam sites to Directory Critic: It only takes me 1 second to hit the delete button. I check every site before it appears on the site, so you may as well not waste your time.
