I started my Bungeebones.com directory, which is available as a free or paid subscription for installation on other sites, from a core of the open source web directory called YALD (Yet Another Web Directory). I selected YALD mostly because of the system it uses to access the category and link data.

From that basic code, however, I added to and custom coded it it many ways and added a lot of features. YALD is a script available for install as a complete stand alone directory but Bungeebones has become a subscription where the links are supplied and the directory is managed for the webmaster by BungeeBones. It also offers an affiliate program providing income opportunities similar to an Adsense type program.

Customization was very important to me also so I made every subscription site as dynamic as possible. Each subscriber gets to choose the directory page's title and description. In addition, the subscription is installed inside a website's own template and so it is 100% branded to that website. Another custom feature, a little more difficult to explain however, is that each subscriber has the option of whether to display free links or not and, if so, for how long.
