Default Subdomain vs. Subdirectories

What do you guys prefer to use and why?

Either xyz.com/boo or boo.xyz.com?

Default Subdirectories

From what I understand the major search engines do not like subdomains.

I've been doing a lot of reading on this and I've seen that there isn't a difference as far as ranking is concerned. However, subdomains can be a real pain if your DNS is acting up, as each subdomain can be down too. Also, makes using mod_rewrite a little more tricky.

I'll stick with xyz.com/boo.

Yes I have experience that search engines are not well with subdomains

Just some hosting specifications may be more for subdomains than subfolders such as ftp account, email setup ... etc

Usually this subdomains do not rank well with search engine. I'm not sure about the actual reason they are doing that but it's got to do with their algorithms

subfolder are just part of the site while subdomain is considered as a seperate website so if we create subdomain, we must know technically more details how to setup, configure etc. If we create a subfolder, nothing to worry. Just need to say to the hosting company that this is not working and they will rectify it without any additional charge.
