I don't do the designing part myself, though I hire a designer to do it for me.
1024 is probably the most common resolution out there, so that's the standard over here. Meti

Oh, and I thought of an instance where I would NOT use 1024 resolution. I'd use it on a simple computer tech site, one of those "search for an error code" website. These would be used by people not very familiar with computers and the internet, therefore are likely to have an older computer/monitor. Thus, smaller monitors.

Yeah all my new sites are running out in 1024 now. It's the common screen res and it gives you loads more real estate.
Always fixed, fluid layouts are hard to work with!
