Also, by refering to testimonials i meant not of any xyz webmasters but of a site which ranks well on SERP and has been optimized well. Am sure you will be able to judge between an ordinary site and an optimized site.

I've also used the submission service by directory maximizer, I thought they did a good job. I liked the feature where they keep a track of the submissions they make and then when they get more directories on their list, you just have to go back and submit to the rest - they automatically avoid submitting to the same. Tried a couple of other freelancers as well, they did a very job with category selections, directory maximizer was more reliable. There are other services as well who can do a good job I'm sure.
