How to promote a new free web directory?

Normally i use submission to other free directory of directories, try to get as many links from forums that have a review section or something like directories announcements or directory promotion, making link exchange with other directories, etc.

What other methods do you use for promoting a free web directory without spending any money if this can be possible ?

submit to all free directories out there.

stumble and digg and all other bookmarking.

go to the major webmaster forums and announce your directory.

put the directory in your sig on all forums where you post.

try to get some blog posts for free on webmasterblogs.

submit your directory to directory critic and all toplists.

this will get you submissions

All those steps are very much important but before that your directory should be well optimized and should be target content of your Directory's crite area.
Surly you will get start submission.

It is quite easy promoting free web directories; free directories receive a huge amount of traffic. Well, I would suggest going through some quality web directories (free & paid) and submit to them.

Go on webmaster forums and announce your web directory; include some facts about your web directory, your goal, submission guidelines and further information that would become useful for a submitter.

Use social bookmarking sites in order to increase your traffic; however as I stated above, free directories get huge amount of traffic easily.

add ur directory in ur profile homepage & become a comment spammer on dofollow bogs high pr blogs & give some people free Featured links with reciprocal for one month or more & add this offer on all webmaster forums

It would help if you're targeted. Even if you're not though, you could send out your address to niche sites -- sites that talk about football clubs in England, for example. The smaller, more targeted the site, the better the chance you have of forming a relationship with it.

I just got many submissions and huge traffic for a new directory by adding it in DirectoryCritic list, add yours in it and others...
