How to start a web directory?

How did you start your web directory? I mean, what methods did you use? Category dump or unique-structure? Free template or custom template? I believe you get the idea.

I tend to use unique templates and custom categories. But you can customize a category dump and also get a free template customized too. I would just avoid making another duplicate of 100's of directories already out there.

Btw meti was it hard to integrate your blog in your indexu directory?

You may try to do as I did before see at servtrek.com.

1. Find directory scripts (you can get free or paid scripts).
2. Set up your directory website
3. Submit to directoryCritic website (this website listed as free or paid web directory). You may also try to submit as premium list or advertised list.
4. See your results.

I have a sort of rules, my own rules when it comes to build a directory. If I build a Free web directory then everything has to be free on it...upload a free dump and customize it a bit so it won't be like all the other thousands out there and I also choose a nice free template.

When it comes to a paid directory I think a custom theme and a custom category structure is a must.

I used the open source directory YALD (Yet Another Link Directory) and then proceeded to customize it. The main reason I chose YALD was the system it uses for searching the database. I'm not pro but I think its system is pretty good.

Then I converted it to search engine friendly urls. By the way Google indexes I must have done something right.

Then I added a custom meta tag feature that makes a new SE friendly page for each category. Each dynamic page has a unique title and description based on the category displayed.

I added some admin features for emailing submitted sites when approved.

I added to the user control panel to allow access to some of the other features such as creating the code to create a "semi" cloan of it that can be installed on any website.

Anyway, it was a lot of work but when I launched a real estate advertising site and realized I was site 360 million and one in the Google results page I figured I needed to do something different. After you get it built be sure to post its link here in the forum. That has helped my stats quite a bit

When I started both of the directories in my signature I set up the script and then entered the categories by hand. King has a free template that is part of the expansion pack that I installed. HB has a custom template that I had made to match the blog on the same domain.
