IMO, the best links are those given on their own.
Most of those will be given without the site owner even knowing about them. But to get something like that, u gotta do something special with your site and attract lots of traffic to it. Another way is to put a link to us page with banners & stuff, they work.

I couldn't agree any more, that's the way a web site should be developed, it may take some time, but that's certainly the way to go. Natural web sites rank much better on SE's, and sometimes you might even get shocked when you look at your web site stats, looking at how many referrals you have, not to mention backlinks.
Banners, have to be very 'eye-catching', if I had an advertisement spot on a web site, I would let a designer design one for me, so it attracts users. Nobody wants to visit a banner that isin't looking nice. Meti

Yeah, "viral" ways to build links are definitely the way to go. They're the cheapest links as far as return on investment goes, as the initial capital it takes to produce the viral content pays for itself with links for years to come.
If you're just paying a few hundred/thousand dollars a month for some big links, while you may get traffic and link juice from it -- you'll simply have to continue paying whatever those publishers want for as long you buy those links. |

Link bait is by the far the best way to create bulk links...but it's also the hardest thing to do.
Take this site for example...the way I look at it is it's one big piece of link bait. It's a tool, it's free, it helps webmasters. People talk about it and recommend it to their friends because it's a useful tool and will help them out. I have never spent a dime on advertising this site in Google Webmaster Central the incoming links for DC are sitting at about 85,000. Bait works, but it takes a long time. I definitely would not write off other methods and use them myself regularly. - Directory submissions - Paid blog reviews - Template sponsorship - Recip linking (with sites in your niche only) - Paid advertising on sites in my niche (banners, text links etc)

Maybe you can start off by doing some blog commenting on do-follow blogs. What you need is a search engine which you can easily use this one below.

Another good way to get a lot of backlinks is to write and submit articles. It's more time consuming than some of the methods mentioned, but it's also a great way to get traffic along with links.
