Pagerank may be available and it is one of the factors that got Google to the place they stand, thanks to all their products/features they are the leading search engine around.

But we webmasters need to think, is it good that Google has control of ourselves? Don't say anything yet, but we all know we are very dependant on Google, but is it really good to allow Google to control you?

As long as we allow Google to have such a huge control of ourselves, we will always be affected by such things (eg. pagerank issues, penalized sites etc..) everything happens for a reason.

I do not care about the Pagerank system, because I believe that my users set a value for my site, i'm just trying to do everything I can so my users enjoy their stay and that the listings within my web directory match my directory standards.

Directories need their own rating system and must stop relying on flawed inept 3rd party systems and ratings

I agree. I think instead of showing PageRank, what should be more considered is the quality of links pointing to a domain -- age of those domains, plus amount of backlinks.

Best is, get links which are related to your niche and of high PR. These are what you called "quality links".
