Before they give you their e-mail address to signup at your newsletter, before they signup with your forum, the user has to trust you and your site?

How do you do it? Put some icons that say you're apart of a "Good Business Network?" Do you tell them "You hate spam, too!" Or what? Is your trust-worthiness built into your site's design?
